John has over 25 years’ experience in IT consulting roles within central government, local government and the private sector. He has acted as Scrum Master, Product Owner, Business Analyst, Data Architect and Lead Consultant on some of the largest IT projects in the UK and has led high-profile deliveries for DEFRA, National Grid, Transport for London and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA). John was one of the original members of Esri Ireland, the largest GIS company in Ireland, in 2000. He has been an independent GIS consultant since 2016 and has worked on strategic projects for key government departments through contract roles for Esri Ireland, Compass Informatics, Version1, Neueda and Accenture. Most recently, John has developed a Remote Sensing strategy for Tailte Eireann and carried out a GIS and Remote Sensing Strategy for the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage (DHLGH). He has also been Lead Consultant for Transport Infrastructure Ireland on the creation of a fully cloud-based (Azure) GIS environment for managing roads and highways in Ireland, developing ARM templates to build the entire environment. In other roles, John was Lead GIS and Data Architect for DAERA on the design and development of their Information Hub, a central application and data catalogue for all DAERA staff that won a UK IT Award and a Special Achievement in GIS Award at Esri’s International User conference in 2022 (https://www.esri-ireland.ie/en-ie/about/news/daera). He has designed conceptual, logical and physical data models and spatial data management strategies for Land and Property Services NI, Ordnance Survey Ireland, Tailte Eireann, DEFRA, and DHLGH. John is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and is a past Vice-chair of the Association of Geographic Information (AGI). He is also non-executive director of Outdoor Recreation Northern Ireland and the North Belfast Housing Association.
